Celebrating Mizoram's Oldest Resident

Aizawl, Sept 13: The Mizoram Social Welfare Minister, Lalrinpuii, has officially recognized Lalneihsangi, affectionately known as Pi Buangi, as the oldest living resident of the state following a thorough departmental verification.

During a special event held at the Aijal Club, the minister announced that the Social Welfare Department confirmed Pi Buangi's status as Mizoram's oldest citizen. She extended her congratulations to the centenarian and highlighted the department's commitment to the welfare of senior citizens, which includes providing pensions and celebrating Elders’ Day annually. Furthermore, she mentioned that the government has initiated plans to enhance facilities such as homes and day-care centers for the elderly.

Lalrinpuii pointed out that the number of senior citizens in Mizoram is on the rise, with current records indicating over 70,000 elderly individuals in the state. This figure is expected to reach 100,000 by 2036.

Pi Buangi, who celebrated her 108th birthday on April 14 this year, was born and raised in Aizawl Venghnuai. Her family was among the pioneers of the Salvation Army in Mizoram, with her father, Thangchhunga, being the first Corps Sergeant Major in the state. A trailblazer in social rehabilitation, Pi Buangi dedicated many years to the Behala Girls’ Home in Kolkata, where she provided care for distressed women and orphaned children. In recognition of her contributions, she received the 'Women of Substance' heritage award in 2022.
